BMI refers to “Body Mass Index.” It refers to a number that is
calculated based on a person’s height and weight. In general, BMI is a reliable indicator of obesity for most people.
The BMI number does not directly measure body fat, but testing has shown it to be a relatively accurate correlation to direct measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing and dual energy absorptiometry (DXA). BMI is considered to be a fairly accurate alternative to directly measuring body fat. It is also an inexpensive quick way to screen for weight categories that may lead to health issues.
As a general rule, BMI measurements are a good basic test for obesity in the general population. In order to perform the calculation, the only information that they need is the patient’s height and weight. It is a fast and inexpensive test to perform in order to get this general information. The BMI Index will allow you to see how your weight compares to those in your local area.
The BMI Index refers to the following ranges: Below 18.5(Underweight), 18.5-24.9(Normal), 25.0-29.9(Overweight), 30.0 and above (Obese).
